Week 1 Moment of Controversy: Tommie Smith and John Carlos
Please respond to this post by Sunday, Sept. 11 at 5pm. Feel free to post your opinion about the picture or discuss the impact this action had on society. Remember, be respectful; you will receive zero credit if you are not in compliance.
I feel that what these men did showed courage and freedom to the black man. What they demonstrated was courage, and that everyone deserves the right to be free, no matter what ethnicity you are.
I think that these men are doing the right thing because everyon deserves their right to express there feelings in which ever way they decide to. If someone is happy that they won something or are honored in so way they should be able to show to their country/culture that anything is possible. Daniel C.
I do not think that they deserved to get booed of the stage or get death threats. They were just showing there freedom and that you can accomplish anything. It dose not matter if they are black or white.
Enrique S.period 8 i think its disrespectful for people to have boo'd them off stage, they meet the standards to earn that medal and i think its really interesting how they put a scarf around there neck and put up their fists for black pride
Mario.G Period 2nd I think that these men have competed the same as the otheres and deserve the same respect. I feel strongly about this because people back then and now have equal rights but still dont get treated the same.Tommie smith and john carlos dont deserve to get boo'd because they just represented their African American pride just as any othere person would..
I think these man did the right thing. Because no one deserves to be treated differently, and feel left out, just because of their skin color. And they also made every other African Americans proud as well. -NI
Carlos S. period:5 This picture represents courage of these men at the olympics. They are probaly trying to say that no one skin color is better then another. What these men did was bravery.
In my opinion, what these 2 men accomplished really puts a new meaning into the racial and period of segregation. These two men proved that the color of skin, ethnicity, or culture does not matter, what matters is that we are all equal as humans and that courage breaks walls. In a county of freedom of speech we can all express our feelings the way we think is best and these two men show it in the picture.
TR. period 8 In this picture i think people shouldn't be judge because of there skin color or,sex, religion. Any of that.Everyone is equal and they should've been treated the same. Its ridicules how American people will judge them just cause of there skin color.
ms. smith i feel that the men show in this picture are showing courage and no fear to the people because there standing up for them self and other people
Ms.Smith i thunk that these men are doing the right thing because everyone deserves their right to express there feeling in which ever way they decide to.
I believe, in my opinion, that these two young, brave men are actually bravew heroes. They were standing up for themselves, but also the entire African-Amrican socitety at that time. They had no right, none at all!, to ban these two brave heroes from the rest of the 1968 olympics, just because of they believe or what they say as individuals.
5th period tabitha morris what i think about this is that they are proud to be them and they dont care what people think about them so far as i know XD
isaac b.period.8th think what happened on 9/11 was not cool at all and its good the show a memorial to show respect to the people who lost there lives over something that shouldn’t have token place and I hope it doesn’t happen again because it would be a shame for it to happen all over again and the air ports have been updated so im hoping the watch carefully
I think that they were brave enough to do this because I would've felt bad if i got booed on stage on the alympics. They did show that black people are now considered americans and slavery and racism is bad.
Rogelio.s I think they did that because they wanted to be free and show pride for their country even do it was disrespectfull. But now they regret what they did
Rafael,S. Period 4 I think this was a good thing to do because they where sick and tired of being discriminated against, so the chose to show their pride by wearing black gloves to show that they are powerful and that they can do things just as well as other races. I think this was a good thing to do to show that they are all equal to one another.
I think what they did was fine, because every one treated them like crap because of their race, and they simply defended themselves just like any other person would . Ciera R. period 5
Ms. Smith is the coolest teacher ever to create something awesome!
