Focus Question: Do acts such as this help to stop widespread problems such as racism or hate?  Why or why not?  Can you think of other examples of symbolic protests?

I love this picture, it really represents how I feel about racism in America. What these two guys did is fantastic, however...there is still racism today.

This picture has strong symbolism, it represent that mankind have the ability to do anything they put their minds into it, it doesn't matter what color your skin is or gender.

I agree that this picture helps to stop widespread problems like racism because it shows people that they need to respect another race if they want their race to be respected. Those 2 African American are brave to do the black power in the Olympics even that they knew there going to get hurt or something, they did that to show the world to stop being racist to African American People.

  9. Yes,becuase what tommy smith did showed others that everyone needs freedom and everyone deserves freedom. This acts will stop racism issues because small protests soon lead to big ones.

Other examples of symbolic protests would be what mahatma gandhi did for his country and its indepence.

Martin Luther King Jr did he did not use voilence as a soultion for freedom, he and other colored poeple did protests

I think that this is the correct way to make a symbolic protest because Tommy Smith and John Carlos are trying to send a message to the world that racism is very cruel and slavery will never happen again.

I do not agree with anybody because if i think I am not sure Tommie smith i think said if he wins he will be an American not a black American then he should have shown both sides not only just wearing and agreeing with John Carlos to show all the pride they have because the Olympics was made to also show gratitude to everybody so it would have been unfair with them to do that

This Mexican drug war was unbelievable but I think jus cause they got booed didn’t mean it could have been cause of racism but they didn’t see it that way

All i can say to this is that this picture is a great example to the racism that's going on to this state. what they did was amazing, and yet the Americans are still blind for what there skin color is. a man is a man, no matte what color or how they look there still one of us.

  39. I agree with Christopher L. Period 8 he sounds rite

I think this picture is very symbolic to the progress the United States has made with the ongoing battle of racism. I think this picture shows that we are moving in the right direction, from segregation and the Jim Crow laws, to having an African American president. I think it is important to see people take a stand against racism, even if they know people will be prejudiced.
