The Mexican Drug War has been going on for years, but has increasingly involved innocent Civilians. Recently, drug cartels are blamed in the attack on a Monterrey casino that killed over 50 civilians. The casino was doused with flamible liquid and set on fire. Since 2006, almost 40,000 people have been murdered in Mexico. This number includes law enforcement, drug/gang members and innocent bystanders. People are protesting and demanding better security from the government. President Calderon has acknowledged the problem, but claims that the U.S. is partially to blame because they are the biggest consumer of illegal drugs in the world. He claims that if there was not a demand for the drugs, the gangs would not profit from selling it north of the border.
Focus Question: What should be done to help Mexico? Is this a problem only for Mexico to deal with, or does the U.S. need to claim responsibility for this problem as well? BE SPECIFIC in offering suggestions to help...don't just say, "ya, this is a problem, it should be fixed!" Give me something concrete!

I think that this is the U.S. problem as well, because these drug dealers are starting to travel to our country. I think what should be done to help Mexico is find every drug deales that the authorities can find,put them in prison for the rest of their miserable existance.This isnt only a problem for Mexico to deal with.The U.S. take some action and tighten up security at the boarder.Make it harder for drug dealers to smuggle drugs into the states.Maybe the authorities could find someway to track the dealers to their source and hit them where it hurts.Their whallets.

ReplyDeletethere's both good and negative results to this drug war. One is that what he doing with the drugs is giving a bit of positive result, the money he earns is not going to him self entirely, it's also going to the people of the city. he opens schools, homes, shelter, almost anything people needs. the people appreciated what he did and they protected him mostly.
The negative result is that because of him there's other gangs that are not agreeing and or supporting what he's doing. So because of that there killing ANYONE that involved even the people around the ones that involved will get killed. what he's doing is both good and bad, i agree with Melissa H. THERE SHOULD BE A STOPPING TO THE DRUGGING IN MEXICO.

I think that Mexico should help itself by putting more security because even if the U.S is the biggest consumer/trader of illegal drugs does not mean that we are the only ones to blame. Juat because mexico cannot control the drug cartels does not mean that we as the U.S. should sacrifice some of our innocent people to try and stop them. Im sure that Mexico is its own place not beacause they had all their fights fought for them but because they showed they were strong enough to take over that place.

Though this started in Mexico, and now traveling in our country too, I dont think that U.S. should help them, at least not before mexico's president ask for help with the drug war. But somehow I do think that if they would stop buying them, then maybe, the criminals won't try to sell it much.

HOWEVER, I think the only way to lower the demand for drugs is to make stricter laws for possession, especially is the southern border states. With less drug demand, the violence should decrease.
